Puerta de la Villa
📍 Spain
The Puerta de la Villa is the principal medieval gate giving access to Pedraza’s compact, fully walled historic core and stands as one of the village’s most evocative landmarks. It served as the controlled entry to a fortified settlement, marking the boundary between the agricultural plain and the narrow, cobbled lanes that lead to the Plaza Mayor. Its importance lies in both defensive function and symbolic role as the threshold into a remarkably preserved medieval town.

Built and modified between the 13th and 15th centuries, the gate is part of Pedraza’s curtain wall system and reflects the military-urban planning of Castilian villages in the Middle Ages. Architecturally it is a robust stone opening set into thick masonry, framed by projecting towers and topped with battlements; the heavy doorways and narrow approach emphasize defense while producing a dramatic, photogenic composition. You can see masonry repairs and later interventions that trace the village’s evolving needs. Uniquely, the Puerta de la Villa plays a visible role in local cultural life: during the annual Noche de las Velas (Night of the Candles) the gate becomes a focal point for the pedestrian-only, candle-lit route that transforms the whole village, and festival processions often pass through this portal. Its silhouette at dusk—lit against Pedraza’s ramparts—is a defining image of the town.
