Puerta de Alcántara is a fortified gate located in Toledo, Spain. It was built between 1020-1030 as part of the wall surrounding the city. It is located on the northern side of the city, next to the Tagus River. The gate has two towers and a gate house in the center, from which it takes its name (Alcántara translates to gate in Arabic). Originally, the tower gate served as the main entrance of the city, and was surrounded by a surrounding wall. Today, the gate and its surrounding wall remain intact, and is an important feature of the old city of Toledo. The gate is a popular tourist attraction, and provides wonderful views of the old city and the Tagus River. It is a truly unique sight in Spain, and should not be missed by any visitor to the city.
