The Procuratie Vecchie form the long north side of Piazza San Marco in Venice. Built for the procurators of St Mark, senior officials of the Venetian Republic, the building gives the square much of its orderly shape. Its continuous ground-floor arcade and repeated rows of windows draw the eye toward the Clock Tower, while the Basilica of St Mark and the Campanile anchor the view across the piazza. Beneath the formal façade, cafés and shops keep the arcade part of the square’s daily life.
