Praia da Nazaré is the town’s main sandy beach, spreading along the Atlantic waterfront below the steep headland crowned by the Sítio quarter. Its broad curve brings together the sea, a closely packed townscape and the imposing cliff, giving elevated views from Sítio a distinctive sweep of sand and rooftops. Fishing has shaped Nazaré’s identity, a connection visible in the colorful traditional boats displayed on the beach and the fish spread on racks to dry in the open air. In summer, rows of striped bathing tents create a repeating pattern across the sand, contrasting with the irregular streets and buildings behind the promenade. This is the beach most closely tied to everyday life in the town; Nazaré’s internationally known giant-wave surfing takes place at Praia do Norte, beyond the headland.
