📍 Portugal
Praça dos Restauradores marks the transition between Rossio and Avenida da Liberdade in central Lisbon. Its name commemorates Portugal’s restoration of independence in 1640 after six decades under the Spanish Habsburg monarchy. At the center, the 19th-century Monument to the Restorers rises as a tall obelisk, with bronze allegorical figures of Victory and Independence and inscriptions recalling key events of the Restoration War. The square is framed by contrasting façades, notably the ornate Palácio Foz and the geometric Art Deco frontage of the former Eden Theatre. Portuguese mosaic paving, patterned stonework, and the strong axis toward the tree-lined avenue give photographs a layered sense of symmetry and scale, while the obelisk remains the scene’s defining vertical element.
