Poznań stands on the Warta River in western Poland and is the historic capital of Greater Poland, a region closely connected with the beginnings of the Polish state. Ostrów Tumski, the cathedral island, preserves this early history around Poznań Cathedral, associated with Poland’s first rulers. Across the river, the Old Market Square presents a different chapter: a trading city expressed through colorful townhouses, narrow merchants’ houses and an imposing Renaissance Town Hall. The town hall’s tiered arcades and ornate upper façade provide a strong visual anchor against the smaller buildings beside it. At noon, its mechanical goats emerge and butt heads, a longstanding civic spectacle that links one of Poznań’s best-known symbols to the square’s daily life.
