Poznań Archaeological Museum occupies the Renaissance Górka Palace in the city’s Old Town, a short walk from the Old Market Square. Once a residence of the influential Górka family, the building adds its own architectural history to collections spanning the prehistory of Greater Poland and the ancient cultures of Egypt and Sudan. Its carved stone entrance portal is a distinctive detail of the palace façade. Inside, an ancient Egyptian obelisk associated with Ramesses II stands in the courtyard, creating an unusual juxtaposition of hieroglyph-covered stone and a Polish Renaissance setting. The contrast between the obelisk’s compact, vertical form and the surrounding courtyard architecture gives photographs a clear sense of both scale and historical distance.
