Power Plants and Lippeaue - Schmehauser Mersch is a unique geological and industrial site located near the city of Hamm in Germany. Geologically, the site consists of two distinct areas: the disused Lippeaue-Schmehauser Feldbahn and Schmehauser Feldbahn power plants and the Lippebach Landschaftsracht. To the east lies the disused Schmehauser Feldbahn which is an abandoned railway line and power station, while to the west lies an abandoned coal-fired power station (Schmehauser) and to the north-west lies an abandoned industrial landscape (Lippebach). The site is a popular destination for photographers attracted to the mixture of industrial and natural features. Visitors may access the abandoned railway line and power plants, as well as take in the views of the surrounding countryside and industrial architecture. As the area is off-limits to most vehicles, it is best explored by walking. There are great opportunities for bird watching here, so make sure to bring along your binoculars.
