Poterne aux Normands is a fortification located in the historic town of Dieppe in northern France. This fortification was constructed in 1644 as part of the fortifications of Dieppe to protect the town against the English fleets. The fort is notable for its location at the very end of the north bank of the Arques river and its main gate directly facing the coast.
The design of the fort remained almost untouched and is largely kept as it was during its construction. It is composed of brick and stone-walls, two round towers, and three entrance points. One of the towers, the sea-tower, was used to store guns and provides a beautiful view of the harbor and the English Channel. The fort was classified as a Monument Historique in 1913 in recognition of its importance in French history. There is a museum located within the fort and is open to visitors. Inside you can find a collection of artifacts, guns, and cannons which were used by the French troops defending the fort from both the English and allied forces.
