Postapalota, or the Buda Postal Palace, anchors the western edge of Széll Kálmán tér, one of Budapest’s busiest transport hubs. Designed by Gyula Sándy and completed in the 1920s for the Hungarian Royal Post, the monumental building combines historicist massing with Hungarian Art Nouveau details. Its warm brick façades, patterned ornament, steep roofs and prominent tower create a striking counterpoint to the square’s trams and constant movement. After restoration, the palace became home to the Hungarian Money Museum, giving the former communications headquarters a new public role. Wide views from the square emphasize its scale, while closer compositions reveal the textures and geometric decoration of the masonry.
