Porto Novo is the main port and largest urban center on Santo Antão, set on the island’s arid southeastern coast across the channel from São Vicente. Ferries link it with Mindelo, making the city the principal gateway to Santo Antão’s mountain villages and greener interior valleys. Its waterfront is defined by working harbor activity, low-rise neighborhoods, fishing boats and broad views toward the sea, while stark volcanic ridges rise behind the town. The most recognizable images capture this contrast between blue Atlantic water, pale buildings and the island’s dry, deeply sculpted terrain, especially from the ferry approach or along the seafront.
