Portland Head Lighthouse
📍 United States
Portland Head Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in Maine and is considered the symbol of the state. It is situated in Cape Elizabeth, just 30 minutes away from Portland's city center. Built in 1791, it marks the entrance to Portland Harbor – making it especially important for sailors who traveled along the Maine coast. The 3-story brick tower stands 80 feet tall and its lantern can be seen from as far as 11 miles out at sea. There are wonderful views of the ocean and of nearby Two Lights State Park, and is a great place to watch passing boats and take in the rugged local scenery.
