Portland Head Lighthouse sits atop a rocky headland in one of Maine's most picturesque locations. Constructed by the same man who designed London Bridge and castle, Lieutenant Henry Mowe, the lighthouse was first lit in 1791 and has provided safety and guidance to seafarers ever since. It has become an iconic symbol for the state of Maine and attracts thousands of visitors every year. Located within the Fort Williams Park, visitors can experience the dramatic coastline and explore nearby wildlife. There are lovely hiking trails to explore and beautiful views across Casco Bay. You can learn more about the history of the lighthouse, visit interpretive exhibits, or join a guided tour. Visitors can also stay at historic keepers quarters or a nearby inn. There’s something for everyone to enjoy at Portland Head Lighthouse.
