Portland Head Lighthouse, located in Cape Elizabeth, Maine is a historically listed iconic beacon that stands guard along the rocky coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. It has been an important navigational aid since 1791 and was the first lighthouse to be constructed by order of the United States Government. The majestic structure stands 80 feet tall, with a distinctive octagonal tower, granite base, and white beacon light that can be seen for up to 28 miles out to sea. On foggy nights, a fog signal is sounded from the nearby Fort Williams Park. Visitors can explore the grounds around the lighthouse and take in the stunning views from the nearby rocky shoreline. In addition, the Cape Elizabeth Historical Society offers tours of the lighthouse and a small museum containing artifacts from the time it was first built. Portland Head Lighthouse is an iconic part of the Maine coast and is a must see for any visitor to the area.
