The Porticciolo in Santa Cesarea Terme is the small coastal harbour that sits at the foot of the town’s cliffs on the Ionian Sea, forming the nautical face of this thermal-spa community in Puglia. Its visual interest comes from the immediate juxtaposition of rugged, tufa-like rock cuttings and the compact quay where fishing and leisure boats bob beneath terraces and whitewashed buildings clinging to the cliffs. Photographically, the scene is defined by strong horizontal layers — rock, water, quay, town — and by textural contrasts between smooth sea surfaces and jagged stone. Reflections of colored hulls and the town in calm water and the narrow viewlines framed by breakwaters make for intimate compositions. Access is at shore level below the settlement, so images often include the vertical scale of the cliffside village above the port.
