Porthcawl Lighthouse
📍 From Porthcawl Coastwatch, United Kingdom
Porthcawl Lighthouse stands at the seaward end of the breakwater protecting the town’s harbour on the South Wales coast. Built in 1860 to a design by engineer James Walker, the compact cast-iron tower recalls the harbour’s 19th-century role in shipping coal and iron from the surrounding valleys. Its white profile is a distinctive marker against the broad waters of the Bristol Channel, but it is best known visually during heavy seas, when waves burst over the breakwater and briefly dwarf the lantern. Calmer conditions reveal strong leading lines along the stone pier, with the harbour and Porthcawl waterfront behind. The exposed breakwater can be overtopped in rough weather, so closures and barriers should be respected.
