The Porte Noire is an ancient Roman triumphal arch that stands in the heart of Besançon, marking one of the city's surviving links to its Roman past. Erected in the 2nd century AD, the arch is notable for its carved reliefs and classical proportions, later absorbed into medieval and modern streetscapes so that it reads at once as archaeology and an urban gateway.
