📍 From Grande Rue, France
Porte de la Craffe stands at the northern end of Nancy’s historic old town, closing the view along Grande Rue. Built in the 14th century as a fortified entrance, it is the city’s most substantial surviving remnant of medieval defenses; its two massive round towers were added later and also served as prison spaces. The narrow pointed gateway, pale stonework, slit windows and steep slate roofs create a striking contrast with the elegant classical architecture for which central Nancy is better known. Seen head-on, the paired towers give the façade strong symmetry, while views through the arch connect the medieval gate with the long urban perspective of Grande Rue.
