📍 Italy
Portale del Battistero di S. Giovanni in Tumba is one of the most majestic and beautiful medieval structures in Italy. It is located on the eastern side of the city of Florence and serves as the entrance to the Florence Baptistery. This portal, commissioned by a powerful Florentine banker Leonardo Buonafede, was created in the late 12th century by an unknown sculptor. The presence of almost two dozen sculptures with intricate detail and religious symbolic meanings makes this place a must see for all art enthusiasts. The apex of the portal is adorned with the image of St. John the Baptist and the Virgin Mary. The beautiful bronze doors of the portal were created by sculptors Pisano and Bigfo, who used a combination of Gothic and Classical styles. This structure is a must visit for all those who appreciate medieval art and architecture and the unique history of Florence.
