Porta Talhada is a gateway in the fortifications of Óbidos, the hilltop town north of Lisbon whose historic centre is enclosed by medieval walls. It forms part of the boundary between the compact settlement of whitewashed houses and tiled roofs and the surrounding countryside. The entrance brings the scale of the town’s defenses down to street level: the stone surfaces and the opening itself provide a close-up counterpoint to the sweeping views of Óbidos’s walls and castle.
