📍 From Piazza di Porta Saragozza, Italy
The Porta Saragozza is the northern entrance of Bologna, Italy. Constructed in 1765, it is the only remaining city gate from the original walls of Bologna's historic center and symbolizes Bologna's long-standing resistance to outside forces. The city arch has two defensive bastions and is surrounded by a large square, a chapel, and an ancient cemetery. The red-brick gate is decorated with two towers, crenellations, and the symbol of Pope Clemente XIV Giannelli – a cypress branch. Inside the gate is one of the most spectacular views of Bologna whereby the city skyline splits direction with a variety of buildings and monuments. From here, visitors can see the medieval Torre degli Asinelli and Garisenda towers, the Basilica di San Petronio, the fountain of Neptune, and many other historical monuments. The Porta Saragozza is a few minutes walking distance from Piazza Maggiore and provides access to the Porticciola Walk, a popular pedestrian street under the city walls flanked by shops, restaurants, and cafes. Tourists can also explore the churches surrounding the gate and the nearby San Giacomo Maggiore basilica.
