📍 From Inside, Italy
Porta San Giacomo is one of the four principal gates in the Venetian walls surrounding Bergamo’s Città Alta, approached from the lower city by a raised stone ramp. Completed in 1592, its formal façade is faced with pale marble from nearby Zandobbio and marked by balanced arches, pilasters and the winged lion of Saint Mark, emblem of Venetian rule. The bright stone contrasts sharply with the massive ramparts and dark passage behind it. From the approach, the gate frames the old city above, while looking outward reveals Bergamo’s modern districts and the Lombard plain; the long parapets, strong symmetry and warm evening light make this one of the city’s most recognizable views.
