Porta Nigra is the ancient Roman city gate located in Trier, Germany that still stands today. It is the largest surviving Roman city gate north of the Alps and is considered a cultural symbol of Trier. The structure dates back to the century AD and was originally constructed using local sandstone. Inside the gate stands a large inner courtyard with two arched entrances and a pedestrian walkway running alongside the crypt. Inside the crypt is a display of Roman artifacts from the city’s long history. The Porta Nigra is a must-see for anyone visiting Trier and is situated close to other well-known sights such as the Roman amphitheater and the Trier Cathedral. Visitors can climb to the top of the gate for spectacular views of the city.
