Poprad lies in northern Slovakia’s Spiš region, in the basin below the High Tatras, whose sharp peaks form the city’s defining backdrop on clear days. Long known as a transport gateway to the mountains, Poprad also preserves the character of several formerly independent settlements incorporated into the modern city. Its central Square of St. Egidius is lined with colorful historic facades and anchored by the medieval Church of St. Egidius. Nearby Spišská Sobota offers an especially coherent old-town scene, with Renaissance burgher houses arranged around a gently curving square and the Church of St. George at its heart. Photographs here often gain their identity from the contrast between compact historic streets, broad basin light, and the High Tatras rising beyond the rooftops.
