Poppelsdorf Palace
📍 From Botanischer Garten Bonn, Germany
Poppelsdorf Palace is an 18th-century Baroque residence in Bonn’s Poppelsdorf district, aligned with the long, tree-lined Poppelsdorfer Allee and the former Electoral Palace, now the University of Bonn’s main building. Built for the prince-electors of Cologne on the site of an earlier moated castle, it is distinguished by its four-wing plan and striking circular inner courtyard, where repeated arches create strong symmetry and depth. Today the palace is used by the university and houses its Mineralogical Museum, while the surrounding grounds form part of Bonn’s Botanical Gardens. The clearest exterior composition comes from the avenue, which frames the palace as its architectural endpoint; inside, the curved courtyard offers a more intimate contrast of stonework, arcades, and concentric lines.
