Pontifical University of Salamanca is one of the oldest universities in Europe, having been founded back in 1218 by King Alfonso IX of León. It is still in operation today and offers many courses and degrees in the Arts and Humanities, as well as hosting art exhibitions, concerts, and other cultural events. With its beautiful stone-cloistered courtyards, Loggia and Fountain of Loney, and ornate Gothic chapel, the University is a must-see for those visiting the stunning city of Salamanca. Located on the corner of the Plaza de Anaya and the Calle de la Compañia, the University is a short walk away from many of the city's famous attractions. Be sure to check out the library and its plethora of ancient books and manuscripts, some of them written in Latin and Greek, and the Astronomy Observatory to see a 200-year-old large refracting telescope.
