📍 From Rua do Cais das Naus, Portugal
Ponte Vasco da Gama spans the broad Tagus estuary northeast of central Lisbon, connecting the city’s northern outskirts with the south bank near Alcochete and Montijo. Opened in 1998, the year Lisbon hosted Expo ’98, it is named after the Portuguese navigator whose voyage reached India by sea 500 years earlier. The roughly 17-kilometre crossing combines a cable-stayed main span with long, low viaducts, giving it a striking contrast of vertical towers and a roadway that seems to dissolve into the estuary. From the waterfront at Parque das Nações, its repeating piers create a strong receding line across the water, while the wide sky and low opposite shore make the scale of the crossing especially clear. This is Lisbon’s expansive estuary landscape, distinct from the denser urban setting of the 25 de Abril Bridge farther west.
