Ponte Luís I
📍 Portugal
Ponte Luís I is an iconic double-deck metal arch bridge spanning the Douro River, connecting Vila Nova de Gaia to Porto, Portugal. Completed in 1886 and designed by the Belgian engineer Théophile Seyrig, a disciple of Gustave Eiffel, the bridge is a testament to 19th-century engineering prowess. Its impressive span of 172 meters was the longest of its kind at the time. The bridge's lower deck accommodates vehicle traffic, while the upper deck, offering stunning panoramic views of the river and surrounding cities, is used by pedestrians and the Porto Metro. This bridge is not only a vital transportation link but also a beloved symbol of the region, and its striking architecture makes it a must-see for visitors exploring Porto's rich cultural and historical landscape.
