Ponte Luis I

Ponte Luis I is a stunning arch bridge across the Douro River in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. Constructed in 1886, the double-deck Ponte Luis I is recognized as a landmark of Portuguese engineering and architecture. On the lower deck, you'll find five solid ribbed arches of granite blocks, while on the upper dec is four open arches. Incredible details can be found in the railing and the two grandiose statues that adorn the bridge on both sides. Under the bridge, you can observe how ships move into the ocean and the numerous fishers that throw their nets into the silent waters. From the middle of the bridge, you will have a tremendous view of the city of Vila Nova de Gaia. Don't forget to catch the white-washed beauty of Ribeira lined up on the other side. A calm atmosphere oozes from the bridge which makes it a great spot for reflection and relaxation.
