Ponte de la guerra
📍 From Calle del Rimedio, Italy
Ponte de la Guerra is a small pedestrian bridge over the Rio de San Zulian, among the narrow streets between St Mark’s Square and Santa Maria Formosa in central Venice. Its name, “Bridge of War,” recalls the fistfights once staged on Venetian bridges between the rival Castellani and Nicolotti neighborhood factions—a form of competition rather than military warfare. The intimate canal setting contrasts with the monumental spaces nearby: closely spaced façades rise directly from the water, and their reflections fill the narrow channel. The crossing offers a view of how Venice’s pedestrian routes and waterways intersect within its dense urban fabric.
