๐ Portugal
Ponte 25 de Abril is an iconic suspension bridge that spans the Tagus River, connecting the capital city of Lisbon to the municipality of Almada on the left bank. Completed in 1966, this striking red structure is often compared to San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge due to its similar design and color. Originally named Ponte Salazar after the then-dictator of Portugal, it was renamed following the Carnation Revolution on April 25, 1974, which ended decades of authoritarian rule.
The bridge is a marvel of engineering, stretching over 2,277 meters with a central span of 1,013 meters, making it one of the longest suspension bridges in Europe. It accommodates both road and rail traffic, with two levels: the upper deck for vehicles and the lower deck, added in 1999, for trains. The bridge's construction was a significant feat, involving American expertise from the same company that built the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Tourists can enjoy panoramic views of the bridge from various points in Lisbon, such as the Cristo Rei statue in Almada, which offers a vantage point akin to Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer. While pedestrian access on the bridge itself is not available, its presence is a constant and breathtaking part of the Lisbon skyline, symbolizing the city's resilience and modernity.
