Ponte 25 de Abril is one of Lisboa's most iconic landmarks. This suspension bridge, spanning the Tejo River estuary, connects the historic neighborhoods of Lisboa to the city's southern suburbs and has become a symbol of Portugal's rejuvenation. Built in 1966, the bridge has been compared to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. At its midpoint, the bridge is supported by two 220 m (720 ft) high pylons and two main cables suspended between them. An interesting fact is that the bridge was built by the same company that built the Golden Gate Bridge. On the deck of the bridge, two railway tracks, one pedestrian lane, two vehicular lanes, and a third service lane run in both directions, making the bridge an important element in the transportation system of Lisboa. The bridge is also a popular stop for photographers looking to capture the city’s skyline, the Tagus River and the Vasco da Gama Bridge.
