The Pont du Gard is one of the most spectacular Roman aqueduct bridges in Europe, located in the commune of Vers-Pont-du-Gard in France. Built in the first century AD, it is thought to have been part of the 50km long aqueduct the Romans built to supply the city of Nimes with water from the source at Uzes. The Pont du Gard spans the Gardon river and is still standing after almost two millennia. It has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Visiting the bridge means more than just admiring its engineering prowess, because it also offers amazing views down the Gardon Valley and its lovely surroundings. You can also tourist attractions such as the Gard Museum, an aqueduct boat trip and a nature park. With the surrounding areas so beautiful and full of history, the Pont du Gard makes an ideal day trip from many of the nearby cities in Provence.
