📍 From Ancien Embarcadère de Sablanceaux, France
The Pont de l’Île de Ré links Rivedoux-Plage, at the island’s eastern tip, with La Rochelle on the mainland. Opened in 1988, the nearly three-kilometre concrete bridge replaced the ferry as the island’s main road connection. Its shallow arc and long rhythm of piers create a distinctive horizon above the tidal channel, especially when viewed from Sablanceaux Beach, where wet sand and calm water can mirror the structure. Changing tides expose broad shorelines beneath the pale bridge, while evening light often silhouettes its curve against the Atlantic sky. Pedestrian and cycle lanes also allow a closer view of the span and the surrounding coast.
