Pointe de Pen Hir is a rugged granite headland on the Crozon peninsula at Camaret-sur-Mer, prized for its jagged cliffs, dramatic sea-facing promontory and wide vistas across the Iroise Sea. The site’s importance comes from its raw coastal scenery—steep rock faces plunging into surf, sculpted stacks visible offshore (the “Tas de Pois”)—and its role as a symbolic lookout over maritime Brittany. A simple but powerful granite memorial erected after World War II stands on the point: the Monument aux Bretons de la France Libre, dedicated to Breton volunteers of the Free French forces; its stark lines and location amplify the site’s commemorative weight. Geologically, Pen Hir exposes ancient, coarse-grained granite shaped by millennia of marine erosion, producing ledges, vertical cliffs and narrow promontories that attract photographers, geologists and sightseers. The headland forms part of the Parc naturel régional d’Armorique coastal landscape and is traversed by the long-distance GR34 path, offering uninterrupted sea panoramas and seasonal seabird sightings. Local curiosities include the viewpoint’s alignment with the sea stacks at low tide and the strong, often gusting winds that sculpt surf and cloud into dramatic displays—qualities that make Pen Hir memorable beyond a simple coastal lookout.
