Ploshtad Nezavisimost (Independence Square) is one of the largest and most important squares in Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital city. It is located at the end of Vitosha Boulevard, right in front of the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria. The monument at the center of the square celebrates Bulgaria’s national liberation as well as its first post-liberation ruler, Prince Alexander Battenberg. The red, white, and green tower flanking the monument contains an eternal flame, which is upheld by a female figure and represents freedom. The square itself is lined with beautiful glass, stone, and steel buildings, most notably the modern Hotel Balkan, which towers above the rest. The monument and the glass buildings of the square often host the celebration of important events, such as the anniversary of Bulgaria’s accession to the EU. It is a great place to visit for all travelers because of the rich history and modern architecture making it a great photographic area.
