📍 Croatia
Plitvice Lakes National Park surrounds Plitvički Ljeskovac in Croatia’s forested karst interior, where 16 named lakes descend through a chain of waterfalls and cascades. Mineral-rich water continually deposits porous tufa, forming natural barriers that divide the lakes and reshape their edges. This geological process, together with extensive beech and fir woodland, earned Plitvice UNESCO World Heritage status. Wooden walkways bring visitors close to clear turquoise, green, and blue water, while wider viewpoints reveal the stepped scale of the lake system. Reflections, pale limestone, submerged branches, and shifting forest colors define the scene; spring brings strong water flow, autumn adds warm foliage, and winter can cover the cascades in ice and snow. Visitors must remain on marked routes, and swimming in the lakes is prohibited to protect the fragile ecosystem.
