Plaza Mayor de Chinchón is a main square located in the city of Chinchón, in the outskirts of Spain's capital, Madrid. It was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1962 and is recognized as one of the most beautiful squares in Spain. The square stands out for its remarkable effect of being suspended in time, with its white houses with red tile roofs, surrounded by the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption and the Town Hall. Its most attractive feature is the central patio, with an array of arcades, where locals gather to have drinks and meals in traditional cafes and restaurants. There is also a large fountain located in the center of the patio, with an unusual form featuring a dome and 4 poles that end in lions’ heads. On the latter’s pedestal there is a plaque dedicated to Alfonse XII of Spain. It is a great spot to appreciate the charming essence of traditional Spanish village life.
