Plaza de España is the ceremonial center of modern Melilla, positioned between the port, the fortified Melilla la Vieja quarter and the early-20th-century expansion of the city. Its broad circular plan is framed by palms and prominent civic buildings, including the Palacio de la Asamblea, whose geometric Art Deco façade reflects Melilla’s distinctive concentration of Modernist-era architecture. At the landscaped center stands the Monument to the Heroes and Martyrs of the Campaigns, connected to Spain’s military history in northern Morocco. The plaza’s recognizable composition comes from its radial avenues, balanced façades and layered view of monument, greenery and civic skyline; evening light brings out the warm stonework and architectural relief.
