📍 France
Place Stanislas is the monumental heart of Nancy, linking the medieval old town with the 18th-century districts developed under Stanisław Leszczyński, former king of Poland and Duke of Lorraine. Laid out between 1752 and 1755 by architect Emmanuel Héré, it forms a UNESCO-listed ensemble with Place de la Carrière and Place d’Alliance. Harmonious classical façades frame the square, including the Hôtel de Ville, while Jean Lamour’s wrought-iron gates add elaborate gilded scrollwork at the corners. Fountains by Barthélemy Guibal and the central statue of Stanislas provide strong focal points. The broad paving emphasizes symmetry and scale, while low sunlight and evening illumination bring out the warm limestone, gold detailing, and rhythmic roofline.
