Pillsbury Sound is the broad Caribbean passage separating St. John from St. Thomas, directly west of Cruz Bay. It forms the maritime approach to the island’s main town, crossed by ferries, sailing boats, and other inter-island traffic. From elevated roads and overlooks above Cruz Bay, the sound appears as layered bands of blue framed by steep green hills, scattered cays, and the larger profile of St. Thomas beyond. Ferry wakes and anchored boats add movement and scale, while west-facing views often place the distant islands in silhouette against late-day light.
