Pikes Peak Highway
📍 United States
Pikes Peak Highway is a paved, 19-mile mountain road beginning at Cascade, west of Colorado Springs, and climbing to the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado’s Front Range. The ascent passes from evergreen forest and mountain reservoirs into treeless alpine tundra, making the changing elevation visible in the landscape itself. Above timberline, tight switchbacks trace the exposed slopes, while granite outcrops and long views toward the eastern plains give photographs a strong sense of scale. A section of the highway forms the course of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, a motorsport event first held in 1916. This is a toll road, and weather conditions can limit access to its upper reaches.
