The Pieve di San Giorgio stands within the fortified hill village of Vigoleno, a hamlet of Vernasca in the Piacenza countryside. Dating from the 12th century, this Romanesque parish church reflects the medieval role of a pieve as the religious center for surrounding rural communities. Its restrained stone façade, carved portal, semicircular apse and sturdy bell tower complement the village’s walls and castle, creating a remarkably coherent architectural setting. Inside, three naves are divided by substantial columns with sculpted capitals, while surviving frescoes include an image of Saint George confronting the dragon. The warm, rough masonry and compact proportions are especially expressive in oblique light, and views along Vigoleno’s narrow lanes often frame the church against the fortified skyline.
