Piazza Sant'Oronzo is the principal civic square in the heart of Lecce, where contemporary life folds around visible fragments of the ancient Roman amphitheatre and a tall column topped by a statue of the city’s patron, Sant’Oronzo. The square is notable for the juxtaposition of rough, excavated masonry set into the pavement and the ornate, honey‑coloured Lecce stone façades of civic and religious buildings that frame it, a compact lesson in layers of urban history. Photographers will find strong textural contrasts—exposed ruins, sculpted Baroque details, and the column’s vertical axis—best composed from the raised edges or nearby café terraces to catch warm side light and the human scale of pedestrians threading between tables and monuments.
