Piazza San Pietro's Columns
📍 Italy
The Piazza San Pietro's Columns in Rome, Italy, is an iconic landmark of the Baroque period. Located in St. Peter's Square directly in front of St Peter's Basilica, there is a total of 284 columns which are said to represent the Children of Israel. Stretched between these are 168 statues, depicting saints, martyrs, and biblical figures. The columns were commissioned by Pope Paul V and significant parts of the decoration were only finished two hundred years later under Pope John Paul II. From the square you will enjoy amazing views of St. Peter's Basilica and its legendary dome, designed by Michelangelo. This square has been home to numerous historical events and continues to be a popular tourist destination today!
