Piazza IX Aprile is Taormina’s central panoramic square, set along the pedestrian Corso Umberto between the town’s historic quarters. Its black-and-white patterned paving opens onto a broad terrace above the Ionian coast, with views toward Mount Etna and the Bay of Naxos. The scene is framed by the Baroque Church of San Giuseppe, the former Church of Sant’Agostino, now a library, and the medieval Clock Tower marking the passage into the older quarter. Café tables, evening promenades and changing sea light give the piazza its social character, while the paving, façades and distant volcanic silhouette create its most recognizable composition.
