Piazza Giovanni XXIII is the broad waterfront square that opens Santa Maria di Leuca onto the sea at Italy’s southern Apulian tip, sitting near the town’s basilica and the white lighthouse that punctuates the headland. It functions as the town’s visual anchor where the built promenade, palm trees and low pastel façades meet a sweeping harbor and the point where the Ionian and Adriatic coasts converge. Photographically it offers strong horizontal lines—the quay, balustrades and sea horizon—contrasting with the vertical of the lighthouse and church; early-morning or late-light brings warm reflections on wet paving and calm water with fishing and tour boats forming small, recognizable silhouettes against the open sea. The square’s openness and coastal light define its character more than ornate detail.
