Piazza Garibaldi is the main square of Asolo, a hill town northwest of Treviso in the Veneto. At its center, a stone fountain crowned by the winged lion of St Mark recalls the town’s historic ties to the Venetian Republic. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the arcaded Palazzo della Ragione, home to Asolo’s civic museum, place religious and civic landmarks around the same compact public space. The fountain provides a distinctive foreground against the closely grouped façades, while shaded porticoes, warm-toned plaster and carved stone give the scene its texture. Its intimate scale is part of its character: this is the meeting point of a hillside town, not a grand ceremonial piazza.
