Piazza del Duomo is the enclosed cathedral square at the heart of Lecce’s historic center, framed by the Duomo (Cathedral), the bishop’s palace, the seminary and an elegant campanile. The ensemble is a compact showcase of Barocco Leccese: façades carved from warm, honey-colored pietra leccese studded with exuberant floral motifs, putti and mascarons that read like relief sculpture at close range. Architecturally it rewards tight, composed frames and detail shots as much as wider vistas that capture the square’s near-rectangular enclosure and the vertical puncture of the bell tower. Textural contrasts between smooth columns, ornate cornices and weathered stone, plus the way late-afternoon light sculpts relief, give images a tactile, three-dimensional quality. The square’s intimate scale and continuous façade lines make symmetrical and layered compositions particularly effective.
