📍 France
The Phare du Bout du Monde stands offshore from Pointe des Minimes, at the southern edge of La Rochelle’s waterfront. Its low timber pavilion on piles is a replica of the San Juan de Salvamento lighthouse on Argentina’s remote Isla de los Estados, the setting associated with Jules Verne’s novel Le Phare du bout du monde. Unlike the city’s tall stone harbor towers, this beacon resembles a weather-beaten house poised above the sea. Tides continually reshape the scene: exposed shore and shallow pools can frame the structure at low water, while higher water isolates it against the Atlantic. Its dark roof, wooden walls and compact silhouette are especially recognizable against bright skies, winter haze or the warm light crossing the coast near sunset.
